With temperatures over 30, we were so glad we had bought a pool for our next visitors, Danny, Sarah, Dax and Travis to play in. It was a welcome place to cool off, but who needs a pool when a bucket will do. Travis had great fun in his bucket and he enjoyed throwing water at everyone too. The big boys were even sillier than the little boys, but no surprise there. Even though they were only with us for just over 2 days we also managed to fit in a trip to the lavoir at Sompt followed by fun in the park, cake making, football, hide and seek, plum and bean collecting, playing with snails and some BBQ’s. Myself and Sarah chopped plums for the freezer and the boys played on the bikes and mower. Dax and Travis have worn Roger out, but he wouldn’t want it any other way and I agree, it was so much fun that we look forward to their next visit. Sunday saw the 31st brocante at Chef Boutonne in the grounds of Chateau de Javarzay. It was huge, probabaly a bit to big as it all became a blur after a while. There were a lot of dealers who were asking silly money for things, but we prefer the stalls where people are clearing out their lofts. We only bought one thing, a puzzle for our little visitors who are arriving on Friday. A couple of things caught my eye including a very well dressed telephone.
Afterwards we drove to Villefagnan for a bike ride. It was only when we got there we realised we should have gone to Aigre, we had picked up the wrong map. Never mind, it was a lovely spot to have our picnic. The countryside was beautiful, we saw the wheat being harvested with the birds of prey chasing the combine, they must have been after mice. It was a very hot day, so we took a welcome break at an auberge in Tusson. The heat must have got to me as I didn’t take photos of some of the things we saw.!!

Again we were treated to a yummy house-warming present, but this time from my sister Natalie and her husband Graham. This time we visited L’Assiette in Lezay for lunch and the food was delicious, but we were enjoying it so much that we forgot to take photos, so only got half empty plates. Thank you to them both for a lovely treat, we will definitely go back.

Another great week but this time spent with my sister Natalie and her hubby Graham. The weather was mixed but on the day we decided to do a boat trip on the Marais at Coulon, the sun was shining. We took the 2 hour trip and to start with, we took it in turns to row, but Roger took over and what a great boats man he was. The Marais is so peaceful and pretty, well worth a visit. The bikes and the tractor were well used again and thanks to them both for giving our lawn a good mow. On the wet days we were industrious in the kitchen, we made fig chutney, plum jam and froze lots of plums and raspberries to use later. Our French lessons have come to an end for the summer, so to celebrate, Meridien Green lay on an end of term picnic with a BBQ and a band. Again the weather was kind to us and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Another lovely week over too fast.

There are so many Elderflower trees here, but strangely we’ve never seen Elderflower cordial in the shops, so the only option was to make it myself. Carole and I picked some lovely blooms that were steeped in a lemon, sugar and water mix for 2 days before bottling. The smell in the kitchen was amazing. The cordial was so delicious that I’m going to make some more before the blooms disappear.

1kg Caster sugar
1 1/2 litres boiling water
4 large lemons
55 grams citric acid
|Put sugar and boiling water into a pan and stir until the sugar is dissolved, then leave to cool.|
Grate the lemons, then slice the lemons thickly and add both to the pan.
Stir in the citric acid.
Do not wash the elderflower blooms, just shake to remove insects then add to the pan.
Give everything a good stir, cover with a tea towel and leave for 48 hours.
Run the cordial through a muslin cloth over a bowl for a few hours to collect all the cordial.
Pour into sterilized jars and store in a dark place, but once opened store in the fridge.
The cordial can also be frozen in ice-cube trays.

Why does time with family go so quick?? We welcomed Gary and Carole (Rogers brother and his wife) and our son Joshua. We hadn't seen them for nearly a year so we were very excited to see them. Gary is very interested in military history, so we took them to Oradour sur Glane which is a very sobering experience. I will do a separate post about Oradour soon. During the week the boys went out and played on their bikes, Carole mowed our lawn (the mower is always popular) and Josh enjoyed tracking down the local wildlife with his camera. We chilled, had BBQ’s and went for a lovely walk around Bouin and Saturday evening joined in a Franco/British meal. We all took a dish of something and they were all served buffet style. Everything was delicious. We had a great week but then they were gone, but we will see them again at the end of August at our nieces wedding.
