Moving Wood

An extra pair of hands is always appreciated but two pairs was brilliant. We had our first delivery of wood on Saturday morning and the lorry couldn't get in the drive, so had to pop the wood over the fence. We planned to move the wood to the hangar ourselves the following week, but Sheryl and Brian were keen to give us a hand. We moved the wood and stacked it in no time. It seems the trailer not only moved the wood, but took some passengers for a ride too. Their hard graft was greatly appreciated and the mornings work was rewarded with a Kir Royale afterwards. Another Lunch - Hostellerie de l'Abbaye Celles sur Belle

Another Friday, another lunch but this time with my sister Sheryl and Brian at Celles sur Belle. The Hostellerie de l’Abbaye was recommended by our neighbour and a friend and was told it was great for a special treat. Sheryl and Brian wanted to take us out for lunch for a house warming present and asked us to book anywhere we wanted, so decided to give the hostellerie a try. We were not disappointed, the setting and the food was fantastic. We sat outside in the beautiful sunshine, the weather couldn’t have been better. All the food we chose was from the a la carte menu, but you could have the menu du jour or various other menus going up in price if you wanted. Each course was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. If you get a chance to visit, definitely pop in for a meal.

Lunch at Cheval Blanc – Luxé

We tried a new restaurant on Friday with our friends, Diane and Nigel. They had been to Cheval Blanc before and highly recommended we give it a try. Located in Luxé, opposite the train station, the restaurant was furnished with lovely old furniture and fresh flowers on every table. We all chose the Menu du Jour which was made up of 5 courses including wine for 21€. Soup, starter, main course, cheese and dessert plus amuse bouche tickled our taste buds. Then with coffee and tea, some delicious petit fours. The food overall was delicious. The main course wasn’t to my taste but with a set menu you never know what you’re going to get. Everyone agreed though, that the Cheval Blanc will be on our list to visit again. I’ve taken photos of some of the courses for you to enjoy.

Pommes de Terre

Roger loved every minute of this. Anything that involves some sort of mechanical machinery brings a smile to his face. We spent yesterday afternoon with some of our neighbours planting our potatoes. Before we could start we were plied with wine and chocolate and pear gateaux, then taken on a trip to see Olivier’s fields and assorted farm machinery. Big toys for big boys, I told him. Back to the field, 3 of us had potatoes to sow, Olivier had supplied the field and his brother Denis had supplied the machine. We all took it in turns to “play on the machine”. I’m sure there is a proper name for it, but I’ve no idea what it is. What a clever thing it is, it makes the furrow, plants the potato and covers them up afterwards. We could do with a mini one in our garden. Afterwards, back to Olivier's for a beer, which Roger noticed was a staggering 12% proof. Now we wait until August to see the fruits of our labours and I’m sure there will be more alcohol involved to celebrate the harvest.

Cooker Quest

We seem to have spent the best part of last week in the car, searching for a cooker. To Poitiers, down to Bordeaux, over to La Rochelle and Niort more than once, but we have chosen one at last. Its a Falcon here in France, but Range Master in the UK, and what is frustrating is that the same model in the UK is about 400€ cheaper. Does anyone have room in their suitcase to bring one over? We’ve picked a kitchen too which will be delivered in 4 to 6 weeks. We were torn between fitted and free-standing but there’s assorted plumbing that runs round the room, so we thought fitted would be better. It will hide all sorts of sins. There’s work to do before it arrives, walls to rub down and paint, walls to plaster, sockets to put in and old radiator pipes to remove, plus worktop and handles to choose. The weather had been awful at the end of last week, and just as we’d decided to start work on the kitchen, it’s perked up. A lovely 20 degrees is forecast for the next few days, so the weeding has started again, plus tomorrow will be rotovating the veg patch ready to plant spuds and veg seeds.
