Tackling the veg patch again!!

After a chat over dinner and some advice from Monsieur Google, we’ve decided not to try and do the veg patch all at once. The weeds are just horrendous, and getting them all out by hand is back breaking, so we have decided to hand-weed a third of it and mow the rest. We will then cover the mown part with plastic sheeting over the winter to suppress the weeds. The hand-weeded part will be sown with some winter veg, after all we need to see some fruits of our labours. The plus side of the weeding is we dug up 2 buckets of spuds, which will keep us in dinners for a few weeks. But there must be an easier way of getting them out, I just seemed to stab all mine with my fork and make holes in them!!.

  1. Using all of my expertise on country strife here is my advice ...
Mow the whole patch, nip to the supermarche to buy veg then sit back in le gardin congratulating yourselves on your efforts with a glass of vin rouge - salute! :) x

    1. The easy option but not so much fun :) Picked a lovely big bag of runner beans yesterday, just need to get them into the freezer. Cheers xx

  2. I'd do a small patch and then extend as and when you need more space.

Although maybe Shez has the right idea

  3. Home grown is the best, just picked my english runner beans, had them over the last two days, yum yum. With lamb chops and new pots, washed down with a glass of vino.

  4. There is a special tool for gathering spuds. It is a fork with the tines bent upwards like a scoop, so they don't go through the spuds but underneath. I am sure you can knock one up," in your spare time". xx

  5. LOL digging them our with a fork is easy if you know were the plants were. You did not really know, so it was a case of pot luck. Usually I manage to hit one or two but this year I did not fork one, I was quite pleased with myself :-) I know you will be glad to see the back of all those weeds. Take it easy D & N xx
